Best Camera Lenses to Use in Boudoir Photography

Photography is easily misconstrued as one of those things “anybody can do.” While it may not require skill to take pictures, the fine between “taking a photo” and captung memorable moments in time is huge. Taking a picture doesnt require an eye for detail the way capturing a moment does. Similarly, taking a photo doesnt prioritize capturing a particular mood, feel, or emotion. Photo-taking is all about capturing the here and now, while photography is all about captivating an audience, even telling a visual story.

Boudoir photography is all about telling women’s stories using a visual platform. There is no shortage of emotions and moments to capture, just as there is no shortage of cameras for photographers to use to capture the moments they want. Just as important as choosing the right camera for a successful boudoir session is choosing the right camera lens for capturing the right details at the right distance and at the right angel. Here, we look at five of the best lenses for five of the best cameras.

Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

Boudoir Photography, Virginia, Washington DC

The best lens for the highly versatile Fujifilm X Pro 3 is the equally versatile Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR lens. This small, light-weight lens has compact autofocus that offers a wide range of focal distances to cover various scenarios for a photo session. This is great for boudoir photography as it can be used be used to capture a wide variety of moods and emotions as the “fits the story” of a boudoir session.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM

Another great lens that’s perfect for “portrait” scenarios is the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, which works well on the Sony A7 IV camera. Equipped for high optical performance and sharp imagery, the Sony FE 85mm lens works well with low lighting and natural colors without compromising color fidelity. The lens can also work with stronger lighting and account for chromatic and spherical aberrations to keep images clear. This is perfect for a boudoir session, which depends on good lighting and good use of color to convey specific moods and narratives.

Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro

One of the most highly versatile lenses is the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro, which works well on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV camera. Like the Sony FE 85mm lens, the Olympus 12-40mm lens is also built to account for chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to produce sharp, high-quality, clear images. This lens can also be used during night photoshoots, which is great for boudoir photography sessions that aim for a more nocturnal feel, which also thrives on low lighting.

Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S

Christmas Boudoir Session, Washington, Virginia

Another high performing lens is the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, which works well on the Nikon Z6 II camera. Like the other lenses listed, the Nikon Z 70-200mm lens is built for accurate focus and sharp imagery. The lens also minimizes chromatic aberration and does a great deal to capture complex textures. This is perfect for boudoir, which can capture interesting textures during a session in addition to capturing a specific mood and narrative.

Canon 18-135MM F/3.5-5.6 II

The last lens to talk about that offers the same level of versatility and high quality imagery is the Canon 18-135MM F/3.5-5.6 II, which works well on the Canon EOS 90D camera. This lens is built to cover a wide focal range that’s perfect for indoor shooting. In the case of boudoir photography, it’s a great lens for shooting from different angels at various distances.
