How a Boudoir Session Can Help Recover from Divorce

One of the most stressful and emotionally draining experiences in life is divorce. Statistically, women are hit the hardest due to a loss of or reduced income, being the primary caretakers of children, losing some of their support system, and sometimes needing to relocate. In the case of women who stopped working to focus on raising children and maintaining a home, re-entering the job market after a lengthy gap in their employment history can add another layer of stress

In combination, the various stressors that come with a divorce can take a nasty toll on both mental and physical health, as well as emotional well-being. One way boudoir photography can be therapeutic during a time of divorce is that it can help women reclaim their power, own their narratives, and rebuild their self-esteem. At Black Lace Boudoir, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, we’ve made it our mission statement to empower women through the art of boudoir photography.

Reclaiming Power

Boudoir Photography, Maryland, Northern Virginia, Washington DC

Divorce happens for a variety of reasons, some of which include incompatible lifestyles, inflexible personalities, a lack of support from a spouse, enduring abuse, and in worse-case scenarios, even experiencing life-threatening situations. While a toxic marriage in and of itself can negatively impact a woman’s sense of self-worth, the stress of a divorce can be equally traumatic.

With boudoir photography, women are given the opportunity to reclaim their power. How so? It starts with giving women the space to reclaim their humanity. During a boudoir photo session, women are in complete control of their own bodies and they decide the rules. They decide the stories they want to tell and how they want to tell those stories. They decide how much of themselves they want to share with the rest of the world.

Owning the Narrative

Boudoir Photography, Maryland, Northern Virginia, Washington DC

One of the common side effects of a divorce is a loss of identity, even a loss of a sense of purpose. By taking ownership of their own narratives, women provide themselves with the tools to take back the dark chapters of their pasts and transform those experiences into better, brighter futures for themselves.

One way boudoir photography allows women to own their narratives is by defining what those narratives are during a session. With the skillful eye of a boudoir photographer, women become the protagonists who shape the direction of their stories in whichever way they are comfortable. There is no pressure to conform to any one standard and there is no right or wrong way to tell a story. There is only the validity of the story being told and the lived reality of the person who forged that story.

Rebuilding Self-esteem

Boudoir Photography, Virginia, Washington DC

Boudoir photography does so much more for women seeking to reclaim their power and becoming the authors of their own narratives. Boudoir photography also helps build confidence by helping women feel comfortable with their own bodies and redefine what it means to be sexy. During a boudoir session, women gain the unique experience of having their existence validated with the utmost respect they deserve, most importantly, they get to be sexy for themselves.
